Week 5 Rankings, Week 4 Recap

The model went 46-12 this past weekend and 29-21 against the spread.  The model didn't do as well on upsets this week as Tennessee clutched defeat from the jaws of victory, NIU came up 3 points short against BC, Mizzou couldn't get over the hump against Kentucky, and Arizona State came up just 4 TDs short against USC...

My top 5 locks ended up all being right.  My "next five" showed why I wasn't as confident in them, going a lowly 2-3.

This weeks upsets include:
Tulane over UCF
Illinois over Nebraska
UTEP over UTSA

The 5 locks of the week:
UTEP +3 (UTSA)
Navy -5.5 (Air Force)
NC State -4.5 (Louisville)
TCU -15 (Texas)
Louisiana Lafayette +18 (Louisiana Tech)

The "next" 5:
BYU -17.5 (UConn)
Missouri -2.5 (South Carolina)
Texas Tech +17 (Baylor)
Illinois +6.5 (Nebraska)
Appalachian State -25.5 (Wyoming)

The model has 13 games within 1 point of what the Vegas betting line is.

4 teams dropped out of the top 25 this past weekend; BYU, Georgia Tech, Tennessee, and Arizona State.  They were replaced by West Virginia, Oklahoma State, NC State, and Boise State.  Utah and USC made big jumps.  The margin between TCU, Ohio State, and Michigan State remains razor thin (and fluid).  I found a strength of schedule issue in the model, so there's some potential variance to be had there; I hope to fix it by next week.  Between a full-time job, coaching HS football, and being a dad, I have a tough time keeping up with my hobby from time to time!

Week 4 Rankings, Week 3 Recap

Another money-making week for the model.  The model correctly identified 80% of all winners and went 63% against the spread.  The 8 upsets the model picked didn't go as well, as most of the upset teams came up just short (but covered in all cases but one).  It went 2-6 in upsets; the 6 losses were by a combined 21 points.  7 of my top 10 covered (4-1 on the 5 "locks" I posted).

BYU covered and lost, which is how I had it going.  But it was still painful to watch.  More painful yet is knowing that BYU would probably be ranked in the top 10-12 at this point, with still a few good opportunities to move up on its own, not even counting losses piling up for some pretenders.  The model projects Michigan winning and covering the current 4.5-point spread.  After the way UCLA ran the ball against BYU, it's tough to see how that will change this weekend; however, the BYU secondary should be up to the task against a bad QB.  With that said, BYU has a way of making average players look phenomenal.

Only 4 upset picks this week (although I haven't been able to find a line on one game this week: Indiana-Wake Forest, which the model gives to Indiana by 2.5 points).
Arizona State over USC
Northern Illinois over Boston College
Tennessee over Florida
Missouri over Kentucky

The 5 "locks" of the week:
Boise State -2.5 (at Virginia)
South Carolina -14.5 (UCF)
Navy -6.5 (at Connecticut)
New Mexico -3 (at Wyoming)
Syracuse +24 (LSU)

Next 5:
Buffalo -2 (Nevada)
Western Kentucky -20.5 (Miami, OH)
Charlotte -7.5 (Florida Atlantic)
Michigan State -27 (Central Michigan)
Toledo -7.5 (Arkansas State)

The model would suggest Utah -14 is a strong play as well (actually in the top 5 locks), but I cannot in good faith recommend that b/c my experiences with many Utah fans the past 10 years means that I hope Utah doesn't cover.  Ever again.
